Of the four seasons, Fall is the best time of year for me to wet a hook. Here are my reasons why:
10.Gives me time to think what I want for Christmas!!!
It’s also a great time to introduce a youngster to the outdoors and fishing. Not having to battle the elements and Mother Nature, will allow a kid to see that fishing is fun. Advice….keep it fun and don’t stay too long. You want to leave the water with the youngster wanting more. Good luck, good fishing and don’t forget to set the hook.

The DeSoto Parish Sheriff’s Office was notified that there will be a planned and controlled natural gas release on October 12th and 15th, in the area of Highway 175 at Gravelpoint. The Sheriff’s Office wanted to let the public know that there is no need for alarm. You may smell natural gas in this area during those dates.

A funeral service honoring the life of Genette Wells Straughan, 74, will be held Thursday , October 7, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 943 Polk St., Mansfield Louisiana. Interment will follow at Zions Rest Cemetery in Wallace Community, Louisiana. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 6, 2021 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Officiating the service will be Brother Roger Morton of Barron Road Baptist Church.
Genette was born on December 3, 1946 to Versie Lucille Roe and Roy Edward Wells in Pleasant Hill, Louisiana and entered into rest on Sunday, October 3, 2021 in Stonewall, Louisiana.
Genette was a resident of South Shreveport, Louisiana and worked for Brookshire Grocery as a bakery manager for 15 years and a pharmacy technician for the remainder of her time there. Genette graduated from Northwestern State University with a bachelor’s degree in Education. In her spare time, she enjoyed fishing, traveling to the mountains, and spending time with family. She especially loved playing games with her beloved grandchildren, and would often suggest playing scrabble, cards, dominoes, or even filling out crossword puzzles. Wherever she went, laughter, joy and happiness were sure to follow.
Genette was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Betty Allen and brother, Randy Wells. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Kenneth Straughan; daughters, Stacy Lincoln and husband, Scott, Kristy Straughan; brothers, Terry Wells, Milton Wells along with her 6 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
Honoring Genette as pallbearers will be Alan Dreher, Wesley Spradley, Wade Lincoln, Kalem Lincoln, Michael McCrory, and John Wells.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude towards Superior Hospice for their care and compassion shown to Genette under their care.

The Stonewall Branch of the DeSoto Parish Library will hold a Parking Lot Sale on Saturday. The sale features books, DVSs, Large Print books and Audios.
There will be bargains galore. And all items are just 50-cents each. A special selection of small paperbacks and magazines will be priced at just a dime.
It is not part of the sale, however the new publication The Evil I Have Seen is now available at the Library. It is by local author Robert “Robbo” Davidson. If you haven’t read it, check it out while visiting the Book Sale on Saturday.
Mansfield Middle School is proud to introduce some of the 8th grade candidates for the Call Me MISTER program.
Call Me MISTER (acronym for Mentors Instructing Students Toward Effective Role Models) is a program whose mission is to increase the pool of available male teachers from a broader more diverse background.
National Custodian Day was last weekend. Mansfield Middle School posted appreciation and Happy Custodian Appreciation Day to our fantastic Custodian Squad.
They are the first to arrive and the last to leave every day. The school said, “Our custodians go above and beyond the call of duty! Ms. Bruner, Ms. Grant, Ms. Jones and Mr. Alexander, we love and appreciate you!”
Tomorrow night is the October meeting of Men of Prayer. Organizers of the event promise Food, Fellowship and God.
Bro. Raymond Wilkinson, from the Open Road Fellowship Church in Haughton, LA, will be the guest speaker. Open Roads Worship leader, Robby Coburn will be leading us in Worship. On the Geaux Catering will be providing us with dinner.

On Friday evening, October 1, 1970, thousands of people gathered at the Palazzo Dello Sportin (Sport Palace) in Milan, Italy. People peacefully entered the event center until suddenly, 30 minutes before the event was scheduled to begin, security personnel closed and locked the doors. The crowd outside, which numbered around 2,000, was unsure why the doors were locked. Security personnel tried to explain that the building was filled to capacity. Within a short time, the peaceful crowd’s mood began to change. They began yelling at security to open the doors. Then, someone threw a rock and broke one of the event center’s many windows. Another person joined in. Then another. Before long, rocks seemed to fly from everywhere and shattered several of the event center’s large windows.
Police officers tried to restore order, but the crowd shifted their aim away from the event center and onto the policemen. As rocks rained down on the policemen, they called for backup. As the number of policemen at the event center increased, so did the number of rioters. Reporters at the time estimated that another 2,000 more people joined in the riot against the policemen. Finally, police reinforcements arrived. With no other non-lethal option available to them, the officers fired tear gas into the crowd. The rioters held out as long as they could but were ultimately forced to withdraw.
When the riot was over, seven policemen and an unknown number of rioters were injured. Policemen arrested 63 rioters. Although the Palazzo Dello Sportin suffered several smashed windows during the riot, most of the people inside were too occupied by the event to be aware of it. The battle between the angry mob and policemen had a soundtrack which may have fueled the rioters. Ironically, one of the songs the rioters and policemen heard was “Street Fighting Man”. On that Friday night in 1970 in Milan, Italy, an otherwise peaceful crowd became violent when they were turned away from a concert by…the Rolling Stones.

Logansport hosted Rosepine Friday night. North Desoto got a forfeit from Pickering. And Mansfield High had an open week.
On 10/1, the Logansport varsity football team won their home non-conference game against Rosepine (LA) by a score of 38-24. It was the Tigers first win of the season giving them a 1-4 record.
On 10/1, the North DeSoto varsity football team won by forfeit in their home non-conference game against Pickering (Leesville, LA). It was scheduled to be their homecoming game; therefore homecoming activities have been rescheduled for later in October.
The Wolverines did not play last weekend. Their season record is 2-2.

There is something wrong with this picture. It has been astounding to witness the very different treatment of U.S. Marine Corp Lt. Col. Stuart Scheller and Gen. Mark Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs.
The difference in treatment between these two men over the last two weeks has been striking. On the one hand is Lt. Col. Scheller, who posted a video demanding accountability from military leaders and the Commander in Chief for their epic failure in Afghanistan, who is now incarcerated as he awaits an Article 32 preliminary hearing. Scheller, a battalion commander with 17 years of active duty, made the video post on August 26th, 2021, the day that 11 Marines, one Navy corpsman and one Army soldier were killed during the Biden Administration’s recklessly and dangerously executed evacuation from Afghanistan.
Why is he incarcerated? Rules for Courts-Martial (R.C.M.) 305 (h) (2) (B) requires that within up to 72 hours the service member’s commanding officer must make a determination or show just cause that it is reasonably foreseeable that the service member will either not show for trial, pretrial hearing or investigation or will engage in serious criminal misconduct. We’ve seen none of that here. In fact, his record of 17 dedicated years appears to be excellent leaving us with the inescapable conclusion that his incarceration is to serve a political end, whether it be for rhetoric or retribution.
No doubt LTC. Scheller will be tried for his actions—although there have been no charges to date—but to treat him in this fashion in the meantime is unacceptable. It’s worth noting that Scheller stated in the video that he was certain he would be relieved of his command and lose his pension (which he was willing to sacrifice because he felt so strongly about speaking out) but he didn’t anticipate being court-martialed for the simple reason that there is no indication he disobeyed a direct or specific order.
Let’s contrast this with the situation regarding Gen. Mark Milley. If our Commander in Chief was not addled Gen. Milley would likely have already been fired. What did Milley do? He engaged in covert discussions with, among many others, his Chinese counterpart at the end of the Trump term. He apparently spoke several times to reassure Beijing that the U.S. wouldn’t attack it at the end of Trump’s term and that if an attack were ordered he would let his military counterpart know in advance—he would let the enemy know an attack was coming. Such conduct destructively usurps and undermines the chain of command! Apparently, Milley also made approximately 20 such calls to other military leaders in Afghanistan, Canada, Israel, Japan, Korea, Kuwait, North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Pakistan, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and the U.K.
This is certainly treachery but how is this not treason? How is this not a stark, direct breaking of the chain of command? How can notifying your countries’ enemies of possible military or other strategic action by your country not be criminal? Can you imagine the screaming and recriminations if a Biden general sympathetic to Trump had undertaken such questionable actions?
It is stunningly ironic that the only military official, Scheller, suffering a punitive consequence is doing so because he demanded accountability for the disastrous Afghan withdrawal while his superior, Gen. Milley, whose conduct has been far more egregious has so far seen no repercussions.
I can’t add anything to the question Senator Tom Cotton asked General Milley in a recent meeting of the Senate Armed Services Committee:
“General Milley, Why Haven’t You Resigned?”
One day last week was the day to Wear Purple around the DeSoto Parish Sheriff’s Office. We’ve teamed up with Project Celebration, Inc. to bring awareness to Domestic Violence abuse in our area and abroad.
Project Celebration is hoping to create a social media frenzy by asking everyone to post their pictures in purple. We hope that you would consider joining with us!
The DeSoto Parish Sheriff’s Office reports that Roderick Whitaker has been taken into custody. Earlier a “Wanted Suspect” alert was issued.
Whitaker was wanted on charges of Felony Battery of a Dating Partner and Felony Second Degree Kidnapping.

Northwestern State University’s Office of Electronic and Continuing Education will offer “Cookie Decorating with Royal Icing for Beginners” starting Tuesday, Oct. 12. The class will be held on Tuesday evenings from 5:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. through Nov. 2 in the Culinary Arts Building near the Friedman Student Union. The fee is $75.
