DeSoto Parish deputies rescue woman from unwelcome late-night visitor

DESOTO PARISH, La. – What began as a late-night trip to the kitchen for a snack turned into an unexpected rescue operation when a DeSoto Parish woman discovered a snake inside her home and sought refuge atop her dining room table.

According to the DeSoto Parish Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the residence around 11 p.m. on October 12 after receiving a call for assistance involving an unwanted visitor.

The homeowner, identified as Mrs. McBride, had climbed onto her dining room table after discovering the snake in her kitchen and was unwilling to come down until the reptile was removed.

In a humorous social media post, the Sheriff’s Office initially described the incident as a reported home invasion involving an unidentified suspect with no arms or legs.

McBride later shared her account of the encounter with the department, explaining that she had been preparing for bed when she realized she had not eaten dinner. While getting a plate for a snack, she discovered she was not alone in the kitchen.

After her husband was unable to leave work to help, McBride contacted her sister-in-law, who was also unwilling to assist. She then turned to ChatGPT, which suggested contacting local animal control or the Sheriff’s Office.

“Professionalism with a side of redneck was just what I needed last night,” McBride wrote in her account of the incident.

When deputies arrived, they found McBride still perched on the dining room table. After several minutes of searching, they located the snake beneath the kitchen cabinets.

Using kitchen tools, deputies managed to remove the reptile and secure it inside a paper bag.

McBride described the successful removal as a moment of celebration, particularly because the commotion had not awakened any of her children.

“Cheers were had all around because not only did they relocate the unwelcome visitor, but not a single child in the house was disturbed,” McBride wrote.

She identified the snake as a baby chicken snake and expressed appreciation for the deputies’ willingness to respond to an unusual call for assistance.

“Although, I never want to call DPSO, but they never make me feel silly for calling even when it’s just a baby chicken snake in the kitchen looking for his own late night snack,” she wrote.

The Sheriff’s Office said McBride granted permission for the department to share body camera footage from the encounter.

Officials indicated the video would be released in a future social media post.

The department confirmed that the snake was successfully removed, no children were awakened and no damage was reported to the home.

While the incident ended without injury, the Sheriff’s Office acknowledged that late-night trips to the McBride family’s kitchen may never be quite the same.
