More than 50 seniors attend DeSoto Parish senior fun day hosted by sheriff’s office

More than 50 senior citizens gathered for a morning of fellowship, games, educational presentations and lunch during a Senior Fun Day organized by the DeSoto Council on Aging and hosted by Sheriff Jayson Richardson and the DeSoto Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The free event provided residents ages 60 and older with an opportunity to socialize, participate in bingo and other games, win door prizes and receive information on topics affecting older adults.

Several guest speakers addressed attendees, focusing on fraud prevention, personal safety and available resources.

Cynthia Parrie, liaison director for the DeSoto Council on Aging, and Dr. Richie Bell, a statewide insurance agent, were among the featured speakers.

DeSoto Parish Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Mark Pierce discussed ways seniors can protect themselves from fraud and scams, including actions to take and behaviors to avoid when dealing with potential scammers.

Deputy Chief Phillip Daniels shared experiences involving fraud incidents reported through the parish’s 911 Dispatch Center, providing insight into situations local residents have encountered.

Brian Williams with DeSoto Emergency Medical Services presented winter safety information, including recommendations for the safe placement and use of space heaters as colder weather approaches.

Sheriff Richardson provided lunch for those attending, with the meal prepared on-site by Sheriff’s Office personnel.

The department recognized several individuals who helped make the gathering possible, including Deputy Chief Phillip Daniels, Lt. Tabitha Tucker, Deputy Billy Locke, Deputy Matt Fox and members of the Sheriff’s Office Auxiliary Team.

The Sheriff’s Office also expressed appreciation to the DeSoto Council on Aging staff for their continued dedication to organizing activities and providing services for the parish’s senior population.

Officials emphasized that the gatherings offer more than entertainment, providing opportunities for older residents to remain connected with their community while learning about resources and safety concerns that may affect their daily lives.

The DeSoto Council on Aging and Sheriff’s Office host senior activities throughout the year, with upcoming event dates announced through their respective Facebook pages.

Residents interested in attending future Senior Fun Day events are encouraged to follow both organizations for announcements and additional information.

Participation is free, and DeSoto Parish residents ages 60 and older are welcome to attend future gatherings.
